Opportunities in Emergency Care (OEC) is a collection of emergency medical classes that invite students to do emergency medicine alongside medical professionals. Students start with Emergency Medical Responder before continuing into Emergency Medical Technician--each are one-semester courses. Students can continue the following year as Interns where they assist in the instruction. OEC provides many opportunities such as joining students from other OEC programs around the state for workshops, volunteer medical opportunities, and competitions.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER (EMR)
EMR is our first semester of OEC and is the medical training required for careers in firefighting and law enforcement. Students learn about emergency services, advanced first aid, and healthcare provider CPR. This course focuses on anatomy and physiology and the vocabulary and concepts of emergency medicine. EMR provides college credits and trains students to earn their EMR State Certification.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)
EMT is our second semester of OEC and is the medical training required to drive an ambulance or enter paramedic training. Students utilize the vocabulary and basic knowledge from EMR to better understand how to provide emergency care in a variety of situations. This course focuses on applying the knowledge and requires students to think critically as they assess their patients and develop a treatment plan. Our EMT class provides college credits and trains students to earn their National Registry EMT Certification.
OEC INTERN
OEC Interns are usually set up as an independent study. They provide assistance to the instructors in a variety of ways including teaching, reteaching, and evaluating student skills. They will develop leadership skills as they act as the assistant coach for their class. They will help with student communications, answer questions, and work on special projects.
OEC classes are offered in Shakopee at our Dean Lakes location and in Waconia at Waconia High School.
