Reflections day treatment is a structured program of intensive therapy and skill building services in an off-site school setting. The goal is to reduce the effects of mental health symptoms. This is supported through various therapeutic interventions so that a youth can return to his or her home school as quickly as possible. The program addresses the mental health needs of adolescents who require intense therapeutic services but whose needs can be met without 24 hour out of-home care.

Youth with the following characteristics may be a great fit for the program

Youth Who:

• are 8-19 years old, who are capable of exploring relationships and participating in verbal therapy in a group setting.
• are having mental health difficulties which significantly interfere with their academic performance, family and peer relationships, and functioning in the community.
• can maintain their own safety and the safety of others.
• are identified as having anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder in a current diagnostic assessment indicating medical necessity for day treatment.
• have families that are committed to actively learning about and working on family issues.

Youth with the following characteristics may not benefit from the program

Youth who:

• do not have the cognitive skills or social relatedness necessary to participate in verbal group psychotherapy.
• refuse to participate in the program.
• are physically or sexually assaultive.
• have a thought disorder which is untreated or unmedicated.
• have a primary impairment which is organic or neurologic.
• have an untreated drug or alcohol dependence.

Family participation in the therapy process is crucial to the youth’s success in the program. Therefore, each family is offered family therapy. Other family support services may be provided depending upon the needs of the family. Also, families attend “Family Night” at Reflections one evening a quarter. This is an informal way to stay acquainted with their youth’s progress and the Reflections staff. This evening also provides an opportunity for families to participate in “fun” activities.

Reflections provides a safe, therapeutic, nurturing environment which supports our youth’s strengths and abilities.

Therapeutic Interventions at Reflections include:

• Evidence based and trauma informed therapy practices.
• Trusting relationships with staff.
• Frequent feedback about therapeutic progress and goal attainment.
• Family Therapy and other family related support services.
• A structured, predictable daily schedule which includes:
  • Skills Building Group
  • Psychotherapy Group
• Other types of therapy may be available depending on the child’s individual needs. These may include:
  • Individual therapy
  • Groups for youth which have been affected by sexual abuse, divorce, chemical health issues, grief, and loss

Multidisciplinary Treatment Teams:

A Multidisciplinary Treatment Team is a group of individuals who provide services for children and their families at Reflections including therapists, teachers, psychologists, program support assistants and other involved individuals. Students and families are active members of the team.

Treatment Plans:

An individual Treatment Plan (ITP) is a set of goals for the child’s treatment at Reflections. The Multidisciplinary Treatment Team works together to develop the ITP. Treatment planning meetings are scheduled every three months.

Meeting Educational Needs:

The academic program at Reflections is intentional in developing and advancing our students' academic abilities so they are prepared to successfully transition beyond our program. To that end, academic services are provided through specialized instruction based on our students' individual need. Our academic program is structured around the core subjects of Math, Science and Language Arts. Many enrichment activities and service learning opportunities are provided.
