Program Overview

The Shakopee Chamber of Commerce and SouthWest Metro Intermediate District were collectively awarded 1.2 million dollars in Drive for 5 grant funding from the Department of Employment & Economic Development to begin work on the Career Lift Initiative.

Seeking to equip 135 individuals with the skills and credentials needed to thrive in high-demand careers in Scott County, the Shakopee Chamber and SWMetro have partnered with over a dozen local businesses, educational institutions and community organizations to build one of the most robust and collaborative jobs programs ever seen in the county.

Eligibility Requirements

All participants must be at least 18 years old, authorized to work in the U.S. and not enrolled in any K-12 school.

AND

Applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria:

Identifies as an individual:

of color
lacking stable housing
without a high school diploma or equivalent
with disabilities
who has been unemployed for 26 or more of the past 52 weeks
with limited English proficiency
at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guideline (see guideline table here)

Caring Professions

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) & Medication Aide

Course Description:
Introduces concepts of basic human needs, health/illness continuum, and basic nursing skills in long-term care and/or home care environments. Instruction consists of a classroom or online setting, and skills labs. Skills are taught in a simulated laboratory setting utilizing demonstration and role-playing.
The course meets the objectives of the federal and state statutory requirements for nursing assistant training.
Upon successfully completing the training, students are eligible to take the certifying state exam and be listed on the nursing registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) upon passing both the Knowledge and Skills exam.
Students must have criminal background check clearance.

Emergency Medical Responder / Technician (EMR & EMT)

Pharmacy Technician

Course Description:
With the need for prescription medications growing each year, the demand for pharmacy technicians is expected to increase rapidly. The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students to work under supervision of a licensed pharmacist carrying out duties such as assisting patients, filling prescriptions, and keeping pharmacy records.
High School Diploma or GED Required*

This 72-hour program consists of:

Medical terminology specific to the pharmacy
Dosage calculations and conversions
Dispensing of prescriptions
Drug compounding
Inventory control
Billing and reimbursement

The classroom portion will be followed by a 120-hour clinical at one of our partnering pharmacies. Successful completion will allow students to enter into a career as a pharmacy technician, and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Pharmacy Technician exam.

Course Description:
This course covers both high and low pressure boilers used in steam and hot water heating, high-pressure, high-temperature hot water boilers used in heating or process installations, and small mechanical-drive steam turbines. With our comprehensive curriculum, you will gain the expertise you need to ace the boilers licensing exam, opening up new
opportunities for advancement in your career.

CompTIA A+ Certification Coursework

Course Description:
Learn the fundamentals of computer hardware and software, mobile devices, security and networking concepts, and the responsibilities of an IT professional.
In this hands-on course you will learn the internal components of a computer, assemble a computer, install Windows and Linux operating systems, connect and share network access, and troubleshoot common issues with computer and network systems. Helps prepare students for the CompTIA A+ professional certification.

Cisco CyberOps Associate Coursework

Course Description:
Learn what it takes to be a Security Analyst working with a Security Operations Center (SOC) team. We will cover the core security skills needed for monitoring, detecting, investigating, analyzing, and responding to security attacks, thus protecting systems and organizations from cybersecurity risks, threats, and vulnerabilities. This is a hands-on, career-oriented course with an emphasis on practical experience to help students develop specialized skills to successfully handle the tasks, duties, and responsibilities of an associate-level Security Analyst working in a Security Operations Center (SOC). Helps prepare students for the Cisco CyberOps Associate professional certification.

Prerequisites: CompTIA A+ certification or equivalent knowledge strongly suggested.
