Student Health Services

• If a student has had a fever of 100 degrees or more, the student should stay home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without fever reducing medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

• If a student has vomited or had diarrhea, the student should stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.

• If a student has had any rash that may be disease-related or the cause is unknown, check with your health care provider before sending the student to school.

• If a student is ill, please call the school daily to report the absence and symptoms.

• Few health conditions are as closely related to learning as concussions. Please alert the School Nurse should your child sustain a concussion, as there are often precautions that need to be taken at school relating to a concussion. 

• SouthWest Metro Intermediate District requires a doctor’s note, the same as for other injuries or illnesses, for us to make appropriate accommodations at school. To assist in planning for any possible accommodations, the School Nurse asks that the child’s healthcare provider complete the Acute Concussion Evaluation Care Plan below.

• Positive Case

  • SouthWest Metro Intermediate District #288 encourages individuals who test positive for COVID-19 to follow CDC recommendations to isolate and stay home for at least five days after symptoms onset OR five days after positive test result if no symptoms were present. CDC also recommends that the individual wear a mask for an additional five days after isolation. 

  • Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 should remain at home until fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications AND symptoms have improved AND individual can participate in routine activities.

  • SWMetro does not require students or staff to quarantine if they are exposed to COVID-19. CDC recommends those that are exposed to COVID-19 to wear a mask for 10 days and test 5 days after their exposure.

SouthWest Metro Intermediate District encourages families to routinely check their child’s head for signs of lice and nits. Lice is commonly spread when children share personal items such as hats, combs, pillows, and blankets.

If a staff member suspects a student has head lice, the school nurse will do a head lice check. The school nurse will notify the parent/guardian of the affected student upon discovery of infestation.

In order to best serve our students within the Southwest Metro Intermediate District, we ask that all students/parents/guardians update health information annually.  It is required by Minnesota State Law for schools to maintain a permanent health record for each student.  These records help us to keep the students safe and ensure the best possible learning experience. 

We request to be notified promptly of any changes to health problems or diagnosis of infectious diseases.  All health information is confidential and is only shared with staff, as needed to support the students and with permission from student/parent/guardian where required by law.  We encourage information such as changes to phone numbers, addresses, emergency contacts, and any other important information to be updated as they occur.
